About Me

I am an educator and education coach and consultant with over thirty years of experience supporting people with  disabilities and their families.I have a Doctorate in Special Education, a Masters Degree in Public Health and a Bachelor's degree in History. The entire focus of my academic career has been on people with vulnerabilities of one kind or another. My work experience has been wide-ranging. I have worked in institutional settings in both CT and Maine. I was a Recreational Aide for adults with developmental disabilities adults in rural Maine. I developed and directed the Allen Institute - Center for Innovative Learning, sponsored by Easter Seals of Eastern CT, a creative, transitional-skills- based program for young adults with disabilities. I served as Executive Director of the Hartford, CT United Cerebral Palsy affiliate, where we provided academic and work  programs to people of all ages with a wide-range of disabilities. Most recently, I was Director of Mitchell College’s Learning Resource Center, the nation’s premier academic support program for college students with Learning Disabilities. While working for the State of Connecticut, I developed community-based resources for people with disabilities, and reviewed documentation to determine eligibility for educational services based on disability and need. I have also taught students at all levels of the post-secondary experience. I teach graduate-level health care professionals at the UCONN Health Center, second-career adult students at Charter Oak State College, and younger college students at Mitchell College.  I lecture nation-wide on issues of preparing and supporting high school students and young adults who are planning a post-secondary education. I do educational assessments and consultations throughout Connecticut, and serve as an education and life coach for persons who are high-school aged through adulthood.  For six years I was the President of the CT Association for Higher Education (CT-AHEAD), a professional organization for disability support services providers.

I am married and the father of a young adult daughter.  I am also an avid life-long learner myself. As a late-blooming musician and singer, for example, I currently take voice and piano lessons and enjoy singing with two local non-professional choirs.
